The large room beyond the oak door was formal with a polished oak desk and long draped windows that looked over the gardens of Buckingham Palace with two additional exit doors, one was guarded by two fierce-looking red uniformed guardsmen with black beaver helmets whilst the second door was on the opposite side of the room. A smart gentleman with spectacles perched on the end of his nose sat behind the large wooden desk beneath the window.
It appeared Arty felt a sudden need to try and redeem himself from his security mishap as he boldly stepped forward, and said, âWeâre here to see the Queen, please.â
âAh, yes, the man who set the alarm off! You realise Her Majesty is already married?â said the goggled eyed man to a cacophony of smirks. âThe purpose of your visit is?â
âWeâve been told the Queen can help us with our enquiries,â said Fay nervously.
âReally! You understand sheâs extraordinarily busy. Do you have an appointment?â said the man bluntly.
âMunch told us to come here,â said Toby.
âAh, yes! I heard heâs just been dethroned â by you three . . . Well, he does get a bit carried away sometimes but heâs a decent enough chap. And I owe the little ferret a favour so I might be able to squeeze you in between the Prime Minister and Lord Percival, the royal beekeeper. Her Majesty can be very accommodating if you have something of importance.â
âWe think someone is going to steal the gateway book and use the information to take over the country, more or less,â said Arty.
âGrave news indeed,â said the man with barely disguised horror. âThen I suggest we waste no more time. Sheâs next door having a cup of tea. Come on, Iâll introduce you.â The man hopped off his chair and disappeared behind the desk before reappearing with the proud dwarven height of three feet and headed for the unguarded door.
âHang on, donât we need to know how to curtsy or something?â said Arty as he scrubbed his shoes on the backs of his trousers whilst Fay licked her fingers and dampened her wayward eyebrows.
âOh, sheâs quite informal really. You can call her Lizzie so long as you donât repeat it to another outside of here, otherwise youâll answer to them,â said the dwarf pointing at the two guardsmen that growled as if trying to prove a scary point. He stood to attention in front of the door, straightened his jacket, knocked three times and entered whilst Arty, Fay and Toby fidgeted like Scouts before a badge exam. The dwarf marched four steps into the room, smartly turned on the spot and bowed to someone out of sight. As he returned to attention he said, âMaâam, you have three young visitors with information of national importance . . . Yes, maâam!â The dwarf beckoned the friends forward.
Nervously Fay, Arty and Toby shuffled into the room, slapping at their clothes trying to straighten out the creases and turned to face the grand old lady that sat in the corner whilst a pack of corgis scampered for an open door.
